Deaf Pioneers Life Centre was founded in 1999 as an extension of Divine Encounter Fellowship International’s Ministry to the Deaf, with the strong support of Senior Pastor, Apostle J. Vernon Duncan.
The vision began in 1997 when the church partnered with Cascade School for the Deaf, then led by Principal Mrs. Carol Brown, to host two sign language classes. These classes attracted over thirty church members and laid the foundation for deeper engagement with the Deaf greatness, and we are committed to providing them with the tools and resources they need to succeed.
Since its inception, Deaf Pioneers has played a transformative role in the Deaf community of Trinidad and Tobago. In recognition of its work, the U.S. Embassy sponsored Mrs. Sharon Henry in 2013 to participate in NGO management training in the United States—further equipping the organization for growth and service.
Deaf individuals in our country often face significant barriers in education, vocational training, and employment due to communication challenges. Deaf Pioneers actively addresses these gaps through outreach, education, and empowerment.
The Centre hosts monthly fellowship meetings for Deaf individuals across the country, offering education, spiritual enrichment, and community. Weekly activities include Sunday morning worship, Bible study, and literacy classes. Bible sessions are interactive, often incorporating drama to help participants understand the Word of God more deeply.
Since 1999, Sharon and John Henry have ministered to Deaf persons throughout Trinidad and Tobago, providing not only spiritual guidance but also free counselling and interpreting services to those in need.
According to the Ministry of Social Development and Family Services, there are over 3,000 Deaf persons living in Trinidad and Tobago. Recognizing their needs, Deaf Pioneers has partnered with various organizations to provide access to education and training.
